The caixa de congada, also known as the caixa de folia, caixa de guerra and caixa do Divino, is an instrument belonging to the membranophone family. It belongs to the banda-de-congo instrumental group of the Congadas, along with tambores (drums), pandeiros, caixas, casacas, and a number of chocalhos (rattles) and violas.
The caixa is similar to the alfaia from maracatu. It can come in a variety of sizes and is tuned by stretching the skin with a set of metal rims, wood and chords. There are also side tuners or chords for adjusting the tonality.
