Cymbals

Brief history

The pratos, or cymbals, are classified as an idiophone instrument, since the vibration of the instrument's body is what produces the sound.

They are made out of a metal alloy, usually a mixture of bronze, copper and/or silver. They can be hit with a set of sticks (drumsticks) or by hitting one against the other, allowing them to vibrate freely or damping them immediately.

Often used in European classical music, this instrument is also present in a number of Brazilian musical styles, such as frevo, martial bands, fife bands and marchinha blocks.
