The meiao (meião) is an instrument which belongs to the membranophone family. Also known as the socador or chamador, it is used in the Tambor de Crioula drum circle, along with the large drum (or rufador) and the crivador (or pererengue; small drum).
The meião is a mid-sized drum made out of mangrove, pau d'arco or angelim trunks. This instrument complements the crivador, and is always responsible for initiating the beat of a "marcha" ("march"), followed by the crivador, the rufador, the matraca (two pieces of wood) and vocals.
Like the crivador, it is played with the matraca, and the player has to be positioned on top of it.
